Fractals and the alphabet of nature
At the beginning Galileo Galilei in “Il Saggiatore” (1623, saggiatore is a kind of scale for jewellers) considered mathematics the language of the universe. All nature is expressed through a mathematical logic.
“Philosophy is written in this huge book that is constantly opened to our eyes (I say the universe), but it can not be understood if you first do not understand the language and the letters, used to be written. It is written in the mathematical language, and the characters are triangles, circles, and other geometric figures, without which it is barely impossible to understand anything; Without these is a wandering out for a dark labyrinth.”
Then in 1975 Benoît Mandelbrot began to talk about fractals. A fractal is a geometric object with a property: in its interior the same shape is repeated in the same way on different scales, and thus magnifying any part of it you get a figure similar to the original.
What concerns my research is the fractal in nature: a tree is a fractal. Each branch is a small reproduction of the tree itself, its leave has the lines of the tree structure.
Each form in nature has its own module, its cell that repeats itself: clouds, water, minerals, DNA. Even humans could recognize themselves in this algorithmic property, just think of skin cells or the lymphatic system. So we ourselves are nature and follow the same rules. Even our brains and our thoughts aspire to be part of this set.
What about writing if inspired by nature and its laws? Signs, letters, calligraphy for using our own body, once again. How is the sign that represents us and belongs to us? Observe nature, its forms, its rhythm: where the fractal ends, the unknown begins. We look at the geometric structure with the eyes, but we want to go further: in the emptiness and in the unexpected. Yes, the fractal, math is just the starting point.
